First Minimalists
- Jon Gibson (b. USA, 1940) is best known as a woodwing instrumentalist playing with Steve Reich and Musicians (1963-'72), Terry Riley (1964-'66) and The Philip Glass Ensemble (1968-present) but he has made important contributions to Minimal music with his compositions of solo and ensemble insrumental and vocal works.
- Charlemagne Palestine (b. USA,1947) is the less known of the Minimalists because he stopped composing in the late seventies (in the recent past he has coming back to compose). His electronic and piano works are very strongs, with drones and meditative and overtone structures.
- Steve Reich (b. USA, 1936) and Philip Glass shared musicians in their respective ensembles in the late sixties but also musical ideas that were developed by each one on his own way.
- Terry Riley (b. USA, 1935) composed In C (1964), the first Minimalist masterpiece. Very closed to the first Glass's music are also A Rainbow in Curved Air (1968) and Sri Camel (1976).
- La Monte Young (b. USA,1935) has influenced many composers with his radical ideas of just intonation and long sustained notes.
Post Minimalists
- John Adams (b. USA, 1947) has become one of the most succesful of the second generation of minimalist composers. Very closed to Glass are his composition Grand Pianola Music and his first opera Nixon in China.
- Louis Andriessen (b. The Netherlands, 1939) has achieved a synthesis of all the minimalists, forging a unique language informed as much by European modernism as American minimalism. He has written political works like Hoketus, compositions for large ensemble like De Snelheid, the opera De Materie with Robert Wilson, music for the film by Peter Greenaway M is for Man, Music and Mozart or the pice for ballet Dances.
- Robert Ashley (b. USA, 1930) has been famous for his operas for television based in recitation like Perfect Lives. Other interesting work non based on speech is Superior Seven.
- David Borden (b. USA, 1939) was one the founders of the world's first all-synthesizer ensemble Mother Mallard. His masterpiece is The Continuing Story of Counterpoint: Parts 1-12 and he has also written Variations on a Theme of Philip Glass.
