This recording is the result of a confluence of miracles. I am grateful to my many friends who braved a rainy weekend to come hear me play; to Dr. Jeffrey Miller at Old First Concerts for his generous and expert assistance; and most of all to Roy and Maureen Chen, for their generosity in helping me free up the time to practice and prepare. This allowed me a chance to return to the repertoire Id delighted in exploring since my mid-teens. Sure, there's a place (or twelve) here and there Id like another run at, but hey, I appreciate the opportunity this recital brought. I should be so fortunate as to get another. Tom Constanten made his professional debut as a pianist in 1961. He studied with Mario Feninger, a student of renowned pianist Edwin Fischer. Mr. Constanten has performed throughout the United States and Europe, playing a wide repertoire which includes music of the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. In addition to his work as a classical pianist, Tom Constanten has been active as a performer of popular music, including several years as keyboardist for the Grateful Dead from 1967-1970. He was the music director and pianist for the popular KQED radio show West Coast Weekend. Mr. Constanten's recent recordings on the Relix and Mauroy labels span the literature from Haydn to the blues, and show his continuing versatility. Tom Constanten is, in addition to his work as a pianist, an active and accomplished composer. His teachers include Luciano Berio, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Pierre Boulez, and he has written works for the New York City Ballet and the Kronos Quartet. Mr. Constanten has also taught at several academic institutions, including the State University of New York at Buffalo, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the San Francisco Community Music Center, and has lectured and performed as a Visiting Artist at Harvard University.
