Notes
Letter received from Mr. Clint Boon.
Why 'Philip Glass: Astronaut'?
Much of my music is inspired by the Space Age, in particular the moonshot expeditions of the 1960's as seen through the eyes of an English kid (I was born in '59). The most formative years of my life saw me glued to the black and white TV watching brave Americans 'boldly going.'! Check out 'Saturn 5', a song I wrote during my time in the Inspiral Carpets.
This obviously had a profound affect on me as an artist. To me an Astronaut is one step away from God himself. In fact no-one has proof (with all respect to the faithful amongst you) that God exists, but guess what, Astronauts are for real!
My 'Astronaut series' of compositions is, as yet, in it's infancy. It's a personal way of acknowledging the most influential people from where I'm sitting. The first 'Tiger Woods: Astronaut' was a B-side of my first single, 'Only One Way I Can Go', and is featured on the debut album by The Clint Boon Experience! Inspired by the young American golfer's impact on a sport which had previously been the exclusive domain of middle aged business executives.
The third 'Astronaut' track closes the album and is inspired by a great friend of mine, 'Andy Gill: Astronaut'. To describe him in words is impossible, but here goes... Complications at birth left him, he feels, incomplete 'upstairs'. In actual fact he is the most complete human being I' ve ever met. I love him like a brother.
Why 'Philip Glass: Astronaut'?
As a single artist, no-one has given me as much diversity, melody and emotion in his work. I love Elvis and would have cut off limbs to have met him, but he was a rock 'n' roll singer. I love Mark E. Smith & The Fall but he is a punk rock poet with a huge intellect and a mega-desire to alienate people.
There are no limits to the dimensions within which Philip Glass can excel. His operas are the greatest ever written. His razor blade Farfisa tracks are as cutting and anti establishment as any punk music. His solo piano music is the most moving sound I ever heard and the first sounds my children heard at birth. In a world and an artform so often overcomplicated by technology and over educated twats, Glass gives us the ultimate in simplicity and beauty.
I am often asked which artists inspire me, Glass is always the first name which comes up, then Elvis! I don't align myself with other artists in general, especially my 'contemporaries' in the world of pop music. Currently I front The Clint Boon Experience! which is, purely, a great pop group in the vain, I suppose, of The B52'S. Several of our tracks feature an opera singer called Alf Boe, the rising star of the British opera world.
It was Glass who introduced me to the opera sound and who made it cool. I'm taking it a stage further and presenting my version of it to an even younger audience and perhaps even a more mass market one.
The instrumental track 'Philip Glass: Astronaut', is the B-side of our second single 'White No Sugar'. It's a simplistic piece, (I can't play any other way!) and is generally in the style of one of Glass' organ tracks. I was in the process of writing a new song when the track manifested itself. For some time I'd had the title 'Philip Glass: Astronaut' in my head.
I went on later to complete the song, 'Comet Theme Number One' a tribute to Hale Bopp, the comet which inspired me to write a song and a commune of freaky Americans to kill themselves. How weird, we are all influenced in different ways by the same incidents or individuals.
I wear my influences proudly on my sleeve. Those of you who check out the album 'The Compact Guide To Pop Music And Space Travel' will hear much Glassness, from the spoken American female vocal on tracks 1 & 12 (inspired totally by 'Einstein.') to the simple three note synth arpeggios on 'Only One Way I Can Go'. Plus the omnipresent Farfisa!
I'm constantly asked about my future ambitions. That's an easy one, to do a collaboration with The Man Himself, P.G! If there is a God, he'll be workin' on it as we speak.
