Notes
- Pieces 1-3 are from a series called Places, Times. They were released earlier on vinyl for both Cuneiform and Red Records. These are musical landscapes of scenes in and near Ithaca, New York. Enfield is west of Ithaca and where Mother Mallard was based during the 1970s. Esty Point is on the east shore of Cayuga Lake and represented the first mile point for my running.
- Pieces 4-7 are from the Anagram Portraits. Each piece commemorates an event in the person's life. Diane Behar (Ah Eden, A Rib) coordinates businesses with the mayor's office in New York City. I composed this for her to celebrate her recovery from an illness. The music evokes the mysteries of ancient times and the origin of life. Don Randel (Droneland) is a distinguished musicologist (editor of the Harvard Dictionary of Music) and teaches at Cornell University. I wrote this piece for Don when he was appointed Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell. It reflects his love for Chet Baker's trumpet playing. Leon Kirchner (Her Inner Lock) was my music composition teacher at Harvard. The piece was composed on the occasion of his retirement from that university. The music here is supposed to mimic the sounds of locksmiths trying to pick the locks of music's hidden meanings. My brother, who is a locksmith, installed the locks in Kirchner's Cambridge home. Julius Eastman (Unjust Malaise) was an accomplished composer and performer who worked with Meredith Monk, Molissa Fenley and others. He was a friend for many years, and was born in Ithaca, where I live. During the last several years of his life, he dropper out and became a transient homeless person. This piece was composed upon learning of his death in Buffalo, New York and is dedicated to his memory.
- Pieces 8-10 are from the Birthday Variations. This collection is an ongoing series and comprises pieces composed as birthday presents for various friend. Rose Mary Harbison is an accomplished violinist. This piece can be performed live with tape and amplified violin. Bob Haskins is a musicologist and a harpsichordist (hence, the harpsichord sound used here). His graduate thesis at the Peabody Conservatory was about Philip Glass so this variation parodies Phil's style. Laurie Spiegel is a composer and a music software writer (author of Music MouseTM). In this variation I use samples from some of her compositions.
